944 Rear Disc Brake Conversion Page

944 trailing arms with disc brakes

I scored these at the local junkyard. These were pretty complete, just missing the rotors and 2 brake pad pins.

Does this trailing arm look familiar?

In this pic the trailing arm is in it's fitted angle. You can instantly tell that it is the same as a VW Bug IRS! The difference? The stub axle uses a VW Bus cv joint. Everything else is interchangeable.

Rear hubs and mounts cleaned up

This is after sandblasting, cleaning, priming, and painting. The mounts are made from aluminum and replace the standard wheel seal mountings. The rear hubs look similar to Type III rears, but these are Porsche bolt pattern.

Carriers and brackets

Here's the caliper carriers and brackets. These had almost no rust on them and came out great after sandblasting.

Calipers

These are the calipers! They are so tiny. Seems funny that they would be so small and still be vented.

Vented rear brake rotors

Here's the new brake rotors. On the inside of the rotor, you can see the area where the emergency brake shoes fit.

Calipers assembled

Here's the calipers together with the brackets and carriers, ready to install.

Complete trailing arm with discs

Here's the whole assembly, ready to mount in my Crew Cab. Next is stainless braided brake hoses, new metal brake lines, and a redesign of the front brakes!

More to come. . .
